DESCRIPTION

The Master of Arts in the field of Creative Communications programme is offered full-time over one year. This unique academic programme opens the often mysterious door of creativity as nothing less now than a necessity for emerging leadership, professional promotion, and creative collaborations across every disciplinary and multilingual background. Top CEOs and industry leaders already recognize the key of creativity to their success stories.

With an emphasis on language and discourse, and rooted in prestigious research and practice at HKU, the MA welcomes all emerging professionals to expand their global footprint and creative impact. The MA opens out creative foundations and futures of professional leadership, whether in an individual project, for example, such as a film or memoir; or in a professional context, such as app development or architecture. Participants in the programme will discover and expand their creative adaptability and competitive muscle in theory and practice, life-changing and transformative for expanding audience, clients, and professional impact.


Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission to the programme, a candidate shall satisfy both the University Admission Requirements and the Programme Specific Requirements as listed below:

(a) shall comply with the General Regulations;

(b) shall comply with the Regulations for Taught Postgraduate Curricula;

(c) shall hold a good Bachelor’s degree of this University; or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or another comparable institution accepted for this purpose;

(d) for a candidate who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English, shall satisfy the University English language requirement applicable to higher degrees as prescribed under General Regulation G2(b).

The programme has its specific requirements with regard to TOEFL and IELTS:

TOEFL: Internet-based test (iBT)   Overall score of 80 with 25 in Writing; or
IELTS   Band 7 with no subtest lower than 5.5

Note: Starting from the 2026 intake, IELTS and TOEFL tests must be taken within two years prior to September 1 of each admissions year. IELTS Indicator and TOEFL Special Home Edition are not accepted.

(e) shall satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if required.

An application for exemption from the above requirements shall be considered on a case-by-case basis.


Programme LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the Master of Arts in Creative Communications programme , students should be able to: 

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of history and contemporary practices in the field of creativity and creative communications in English, with a focus in the field for the multilingual and global creative professional.
  2. Analyze with critical and creative skills in the practices of creativity and creative communications internationally, across contemporary and fluid developments of genre and multimedia platforms.
  3. Analyze the problems and productive junctures of period, expectation and craft in acts of creative staging and communications, along with the identifying major and pivotal moments in making creative decisions for both development and impact of a growing project
  4. Identify and practice critical and creative strategies of macro and micro revisions through collaborative workshops and studios, developing expertise in creative construction and impact
  5. Preparations and stagings of original creative signature in multilingual contexts eligible for presentations, projects, artistic works, and professional development.
  6. Prepare for creative participation in a professional field or personal project through guided work in the ‘built environments’ of contemporary creative media and communications for greater distinction, impact and leadership.

Programme Structure

The Master of Arts in Creative Communications programme is a one-year course that runs over two semesters. In Semester 1, students will take two core courses and three elective courses. In Semester 2, students will complete two elective courses and a capstone course, where students have the opportunity to design and produce their own creative project.

The programme consists of 60 credits, including two compulsory 9-credit courses, five 6-credit elective courses that cover different areas of creative practice, and a compulsory 12-credit Capstone Experience.
