Prizes and Scholarship to be awarded in the School of English
HKU TPG Scholarship for UG Class of 2020

The University of Hong Kong announced the launch of the "HKU TPG Scholarship for UG Class of 2020" to support undergraduate students of the 2020 graduating class to pursue their studies further at an unconventional time when the global economic outlook is unstable. Eligible undergraduate students who meet the programme admission criteria can apply to study any one of the 49 taught postgraduate programmes on the list below for the academic year 2020-21, and will be awarded a scholarship of a value equivalent to 50% of the tuition fees of the programme. The Master of Arts in English Studies and the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in English offered by the School of English are on the programme list. For details, please click here.

Subject Prizes
Annie Wong Prize in English Literature

The prize shall be awarded annually to a full-time final-year BA student who has achieved excellent academic performance in the field of English Literary Studies offered by the School of English.

Ellis Bell Prize in English Literature and Comparative Literature

The prize shall be awarded annually to a full-time final-year BA student who has achieved excellent academic performance in a majority of papers in the Department of English and Comparative Literature.

Falling Leaves Foundation Prize in Cross-Cultural Studies in English/English Literary Studies

The prize shall be awarded annually to a full-time final-year BA student who has achieved excellent academic performance in the field of Cross-Cultural Studies in English or English Literary Studies.

Joseph Yau Sai Man Memorial Prize in English Literature

The prize shall be awarded annually to a full-time final-year BA student majoring in English Studies who has achieved excellent academic performance.

Joseph Yau Sai Man Memorial Prize in English Literature

The prize shall be awarded annually to a full-time second-year BA student majoring in English Studies who has achieved excellent academic performance.

Maisie Choa English Poetry Prize

The prize shall be awarded annually to students majoring in English Studies in the Faculty of Arts, on the basis of academic merit shown in the coursework (essays or projects) for English Poetry in courses such as Reading Poetry, The Idea of China, Shakespeare, Creative Writing, Imagining Hong Kong, Modernism.

R.K.M. Simpson Prize in English

The prize shall be awarded annually to a full-time final-year BA student who has achieved excellent academic performance in at least 48 credits in English.

Sir Robert Kotewall Memorial Prize

The prize shall be awarded annually to a full-time final-year BA student pursuing either a major offered by the School of English or the School of Chinese who has achieved excellent academic performance and holds an honours score not lower than 3.3.

The Lily Pond Prize in English

The prize shall be awarded annually to a full-time BA student (in the third-year or above) in the Faculty of Arts majoring or minoring in English Studies or Language and Communication, and who has achieved the best academic performance including good results in at least TWO Advanced ENGL or LCOM courses (including at least ONE Literature-related course).

Experiential Learning Award
Melanie Lee Enrichment Award in English

Up to two awards, at the value of HK$10,000 each, shall be awarded annually to full-time BA students (in the second-year or above) in the Faculty of Arts majoring or minoring in English Studies or Language and Communication:

  1. One award for a student who has achieved the best result in the School’s credit-bearing internship course, ENGL3040 or LCOM3005 in an academic year, whose CGPA should be of 3.20 or above;
  2. One award for a student who has an academic overseas travel plan, which excludes outgoing exchange studies. The selection shall be based on academic merit (CGPA should be of 3.00 or above) and relevance of the travel plan to the student’s studies. Travel must be completed during the same academic year when the award is made to the student.
    (The application procedures are announced to the major and minor students in September each year.)

Note: A student can only be granted this award once during his or her studies. The Award cannot be held concurrently with other merit-based enrichment awards administered by the University for the same activity. The Award may be held concurrently with non-merit-based financial aid.

Scholarship

The Scholarship of HK$10,000 each shall be awarded annually to up to two selected final-year students majoring in English Studies, on the basis of academic merits, intellectual achievement, and contribution to the community.
