Course Description

This course critically explores the intersection of cultural heritage, identity, and the digital visual arts through contemporary artistic practices. Students will engage in reimagining and redefining heritage by incorporating transmedia and multimedia techniques. Through a combination of personal experiences and broader cultural frameworks, students will employ innovative artistic strategies to reinterpret heritage in the digital age. The course encourages advanced critical thinking and self-reflection, providing an environment for students to challenge traditional views on identity and heritage through the creative arts. Students who complete this course will develop a more critical understanding of the dynamic relationship between heritage studies, curatorial practices, and digital media ecosystems.

Objectives

  • To examine cultural heritage and identity through the lens of contemporary Art, including digital and multimedia practices.
  • To encourage students to connect personal or shared experiences with larger cultural narratives in their artwork.
  • To push beyond traditional artistic methods by integrating innovative strategies in digital and visual art forms.
  • To develop critical thinking skills through assignments that require rationales, artist statements, and presentations.
  • To offer a foundation for students to challenge and reshape representations of cultural heritage within modern artistic contexts.
Organisation

Students are required to attend a two-hour lecture on Monday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 2:50 pm.

Moodle: The course Moodle site is the main portal for your individual learning through the semester. You will also upload your written assignments on Moodle (via Turnitin).

Readings: Weekly readings will usually consist of primary reading(s) (e.g. a selection of poems, scenes from a film) and secondary reading(s) (i.e. at least one critical or theoretical text). Most readings will be available on Moodle and/or in the libraries. Students need to complete the assigned primary and secondary readings for a full understanding of the lectures. The recommended readings are intended to offer more perspectives.
