MFA in Creative Writing in English (MFA) at HKU

Welcome to MFA

What is writing to you? What makes writing creative? HKU's one-year MFA in Creative Writing brings together students of diverse backgrounds, interests, and approaches to writing for an intensive and dynamic year of creative practice. Based in Hong Kong, the programme engages students in writing across Chinese, Asian, and international contexts through foundational modules, intensive workshops, a full-year capstone project, and electives exploring contemporary forms and concerns, from hybrid and speculative to urban and diasporic writing.

Beyond the classroom, students join a wider writing ecosystem. Through Black Box Magazine, the cross-programme Open Readings, and the Black Box Writers' Series, students engage with a broader community of readers, writers, editors, alumni, and cultural practitioners. Whether you are drawn to fantasy worldbuilding, historical reimagining, self-expression, criticism, or digital experimentation, the MFA offers a rigorous, inclusive environment and an expanding network to deepen your engagement with writing, develop ambitious projects, and keep becoming the writer you want to be.
