Course Description

Special Topics in Film and Screen Cultures is an advanced, topic-driven course that explores contemporary screen media within a Communication and creative industries framework. Each iteration of the course focuses on a specific theme, problem, or emerging area of practice, allowing the curriculum to respond to shifts in media technologies, industry trends, and scholarly debate. This flexible structure ensures that the course remains current, research-led, and closely aligned with developments across film, television, streaming, and digital platforms.

Depending on the year and instructor, topics may address areas such as screen authorship and creative leadership, platform economies and content strategy, global screen industries, audience analytics and fan cultures, representation and diversity, genre and branding, documentary and factual media, transmedia storytelling, or the politics of visual communication. The thematic focus provides depth while maintaining openness to innovation and change across the screen sector.

The course combines rigorous critical analysis with sustained attention to industry contexts and communication processes. Students examine how screen texts are conceived, produced, circulated, and received within complex media ecologies. Conceptual frameworks are applied to case studies drawn from contemporary and historical screen culture, enabling students to connect theoretical insight with professional practice and strategic thinking.
