Angus Chan tutors courses in English Language and Linguistics and Language and Communication. He read English Studies at HKU and was a Visiting Student in English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford. His teaching and research interests centre broadly on sociolinguistics, with particular foci in historical sociolinguistics (from the eighteenth century to the present day), pidgin and creole studies and World Englishes. At the heart of his research is the use of first-hand archival data, such as conversation transcripts and policy papers, to understand the sociolinguistic development of English in East Asian regions. He also has research interests in the areas of (multimodal) discourse studies and intercultural pragmatics. From 2022 to 2024, he was a Research Assistant and, latterly, a Project Manager for the HKU Research Impact and Initiative on Communication in Healthcare (RIICH), where he provided administrative and research support for two Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) projects on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on university graduates’ transitions to the (post-pandemic) workforce in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. At present, he remains an Affiliated Researcher with HKU RIICH.
