Secularism and Post-Secularism
Recently a number of writers around the world have turned the tables on one of the pillars of the Enlightenment: they have sought to historicize Secularism, in the way that Secularism in its heyday historicized religion, in the hope of confining it to the dustbin of history. In this seminar I want to examine what is at stake in such a move. After recalling the foundational urge of Secularism, I place the debate in the context of on-going globalization and attempt to draw out what the debate tells us about this process.
