Creative Writing Studio

The Creative Writing Studio, headed by Dr. Page Richards, offers a home at HKU to writers, dramatists, and artists. Established ten years ago, the Studio has now moved to its new location on the Centennial Campus, proudly the host or sponsor of longstanding programmes, including the MFA in Creative Writing, Yuan Yang: A Journal of Hong Kong and International Writing, The HKU International Poetry Prize, The Writers' Series, and Moving Poetry, as well as new initiatives, including the HKU Black Box Theatreartistinvisible, and Thirtyspokes theatre productions.

The Creative Writing Studio has a long history of developing work by undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as forging ties with local artists and the community. The Writers' Gallery, Drama Bagatelles, and a multimedia event, "Voices of Hong Kong Composers, Encounters of Word and Music," name only a few of the many productions and programmes that the Studio has warmly welcomed. Last fall, we joined with the Faculty of Arts and the University Artists Scheme to host a series of major events from the poet Henri Cole, who offered readings, talks, and master classes. This year we hosted in the HKU Black Box an original script "Only Through Time: Minding the Gap" written by Wilson Chik, a graduate of the MFA at HKU and featured Hong Kong artist for the international Still Point festival, celebrating and supporting the creative arts and artists around the world.

As one graduate from the undergraduate Creative Writing class wrote, "I have become a different person after learning to...craft my own work, a better person!" Another graduate said of her work in the Studio that the study and practice of creative writing "inspired me to do things" in writing and art that "I had never thought" possible.

The Creative Writing Studio forges friendships and kinship among writers and artists on campus and more widely in Hong Kong and overseas.  We welcome you to join us!
