{"id":14150,"date":"2014-12-30T11:59:40","date_gmt":"2014-12-30T03:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.english.hku.hk\/alumni\/?p=14150"},"modified":"2015-12-23T14:32:16","modified_gmt":"2015-12-23T06:32:16","slug":"to-my-nieces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.hku.hk\/alumni\/14150\/to-my-nieces\/","title":{"rendered":"To My Nieces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Carmen Tomfohrde<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14151\" title=\"2015Jan2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.english.hku.hk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2015Jan2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.hku.hk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2015Jan2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/english.hku.hk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2015Jan2-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Having spent nine of the past twelve years overseas, I have been abroad for most of the lives of my nieces, now ages seven and eight and a half.\u00a0 As they grow older, I realize how long I<\/em><em>\u2019ve been away.\u00a0 As my family gathered for Thanksgiving in the United States, I was unable to Skype them because I<\/em><em>\u2019d lost my voice.\u00a0 Instead, emojis and dozens of short voice clips flowed in from my nieces through my mother<\/em><em>\u2019s phone, and I replied by text and email (faster than typing on my phone).\u00a0 Below is an exchange from this recent conversation, in which I attempted to explain to my nieces what it is I think I<\/em><em>\u2019m doing as a PhD student.\u00a0 They read it as a Word document, and replied with voice clips and emojis<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019m a PhD student right now.\u00a0 \u201cPhD\u201d means \u201cDoctor of Philosophy.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s a hard word.\u00a0 When you say it out loud, it sounds like: fill \u2013 ah \u2013 so \u2013 fee.\u00a0 The \u201cPh\u201d comes from \u201cPhilosophy\u201d and the \u201cD\u201d comes from \u201cDoctor.\u201d\u00a0 How can I become a doctor of philosophy?\u00a0 First, wait a minute.\u00a0 What is philosophy?\u00a0 It has something to do with thinking, and about what we know: about knowledge.\u00a0 When you go see medical doctors, they tell you how to make something in your body better. \u00a0I am working with ideas and knowledge, not human bodies.\u00a0 I have a desire to make thinking and ideas about something better.\u00a0 People who get a PhD choose one kind of knowledge or focus.\u00a0 Maybe it is in music, or history, or math, or science.\u00a0 They study for a long time, become experts on their topic, and share what they are learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019m in Hong Kong.\u00a0 Hong Kong is a long way away from your home in the USA.\u00a0 There\u2019s an ocean in between us, so you can\u2019t drive here.\u00a0 The ocean is really, really big, so if you would take a boat, the trip would be very slow and long.\u00a0 Instead I take an airplane to travel between Hong Kong and the USA.\u00a0 Because I\u2019m on the other side of the world, when your house is facing the sun, my home cannot see the sun.
