For many alumni, theatre at HKU has roots in our days as undergraduates. Here the Shax Theatre Group provides an update to recent developments, beginning with the announcement of A Midsummer Night’s dream, co-directed by School of English alumni Rosalind Wong.

Love may be a word made up of just four letters, but these four letters make up a world beyond description. Not until you are immersed in the river of love would you understand how love could draw two different people together into a sole entity. To offer a glimpse of this elusive and amusing experience, Shax Theatre Group is staging William Shakespeare’s renowned romantic comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.

Dates: 11/ 12/ 13 February 2013
Time: 19:30 – 21:00

More about Us

The Shax Theatre Group (STG) began with merely 5 members who were passionate about the bard’s works. Our size, however, did not reflect our ability to direct, produce and perform. 2014 was an especially memorable year for us. We staged two plays in the second semester: first Othello in a 1980s Hong Kong triad setting followed by Twelfth Night in a Downton Abbey setting. The Twelfth Night cast also gave a guest performance at Shakespeare in the Port, which is the largest Shakespeare event in Hong Kong. Nonetheless, as much as these events were fun and fulfilling within our small group, we realised that our vision to share Shakespeare’s intriguing plays had to be supported by a larger team.

This year, we decided to take a significant step for our group: mass recruitment across campus. We have welcomed 30 new members, including post-graduates and even part-time students, to the STG family. To streamline production and produce even better shows, we underwent a restructuring process that created new teams. They will be joining us in our latest production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Not only has our group expanded, our previous success has prompted us to seek a larger performance venue with better technical equipment. Back by popular demand, we are now performing three shows instead of one.

Our hard work has paid off. This year, we are very fortunate to be granted the F:A:C:E: subsidy for Arts and Cultural Project, which will cover a significant portion of our production cost. Funded by the General Education Unit, this has no doubt given us a leg up in fulfilling our aspirations to make Shakespeare more accessible. This opportunity is a recognition of our hardwork and a milestone for our group. We are happy to have developed connections in the HKU community.

While STG may be young, we are Shakespeare addicts who are committed to bringing his plays to life. The Shaxbies will continue to be self-funded and rely mainly on our annual performance to cover our production budget. All expenditure is covered in advance by our members. Even so, as mainly full-time students, our resources are limited and we are currently looking for a permenant storage area. That has not deterred us from making plans for future productions. Shows will be staged in the second half of 2015 and first half of 2016. We appreciate any kind of support from friends and alumni.

STG is a self-funded student group that depends on private donations and ticket sales for its operation. If you would like to donate or to know more about us, please email us at shaxtheatregroup@gmail.com or visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ShaxTheatreGroup.
